Creative Friday #14 - Sharing My Journey As An Artist

It's Friday and you know what that means - it's time for Creative Friday! Today I am sharing the story of my journey as an artist. The road hasn't always been smooth and I could have given up but I didn't - I am stubborn and stuck with it.

I was in 6th grade and it was art day. Now let me tell you I loved art - my schoolwork was always covered in doodles. So today was going to be a good day. My class got to art and the teacher gave us an assignment of making a collage using the different materials she had on hand. I really enjoyed it until...

Until the teacher came around and picking up mine and a boy's collage, she very snidely said, "I like boys' art better because they use brighter colors than girls do". On another occasion, she attacked my environmental poster, making fun of it (my theme was "Trees Need To Breathe Too"). I came to dislike art day and especially that teacher.

Fast forward to high school. I was in a crafts class. Now let me tell you, this teacher knew how to encourage her students. I loved her. So much so, when she told me I should take Art so I could learn the basics, I did although I didn't really want to (previous bad experience). Unfortunately, Art was a blowoff class and the teacher was one with little imagination. He made fun of my "Butterfly Dragon" because that is not how dragons looked. Sigh.
"Don't Wake The Dragon" I just had fun with this one!

I became convinced I'd never be a good artist but I could be good at crafts. I made wooden Christmas ornaments and other wood things and it was fun. And yet, something burned within me. I wanted more. I didn't want to just copy someone else's design - I wanted to paint my own. I now know God was nudging me to become who He created me to be - an artist.

My mom passed away when I was forty and something just snapped in me. I wasn't going to put off the things I'd always wanted to learn anymore. I took horseback lessons (such joy!) and then decided to try watercolor classes. Thus began my journey into becoming an artist.

I still had poor teachers that pushed their styles instead of helping me develop mine.
I really don't like this painting. This is one where I had to do what the teacher did and when I deviated from hers (what can I say -I didn't want a carbon copy of hers),  she got mad at me. So frustrating!

Then one day, a friend told me about a new art school that had opened up near me. "You should go try them out", she told me. Why not? I thought, so I called and set up a time to go talk to the owner. Best.thing. ever. John was encouraging and positive and completely put me at my ease. Finally through his teaching, I felt confident enough to call myself an artist.
"Midnight's Journey" First painting I did without tracing any images just
drew with paint. I was so scared but my teacher told me I could do it!
And guess what? I did!

Which brings me to now. What's next? It's a little scary thinking about working to become a thriving artist. But God is faithful and has put a wonderful mentoring group in front of me. It is just what I need at this stage. I'm excited even if a little afraid. (What if I fail?)
"Morning Meditation" I love the suggestion of this one -
meeting up with God in the stillness of a misty morning.

At the same time, wonderful KariAnne over at Thistlewood Farms invited me to be part of her book launch team #SoCloseToAmazing.  In it, there's a quote that has spoken volumes to me.

I'm not alone! God's got this. He's been leading me this whole journey: the mean teachers, the ones who didn't have the vision to teach beyond their style, the gifted, talented, and encouraging one who taught me to how to be an artist, and now this artist mentoring group. (btw - I did learn from each one in spite of bad teaching styles - well, except for that 6th grade teacher). I finally feel I'm on the right path and can truly become the artist God created me to be.
"Pushing Up Daisies"
Here's to the next chapter in my journey. Tin Roof Studio is coming along nicely and will be ready by the end of the year. Then with God walking along with me, I will take the next step and then the next and the next.

And best of all? There's no failure - just lessons to be learned.

Thanks for reading about my journey. Next week, I'll have a painting to share with you.

Gallery Wall Reveal

I bet you thought I forgot all about my gallery wall. Or that I had never finished it. Nope, I just got caught up in our beautiful Spring weather, a laundry room refresh, working on the wedding spot, and so on.

But today I'm finally sharing the gallery wall in my entryway at the city house. The galvanized family name is hung,

the scrabble letter names are up, along with the photos and artwork.

I put the photos in simple frames, glued magnets to the backs, and then stuck them to this galvanized board I found at Hobby Lobby.

Jay's robot painting on an old cd

and Megan's embroidered bird
showcase examples of their artwork.

The entryway table has been refreshed with pretty Spring flowers and candles plus a galvanized bucket to hold the mailbox key and outgoing mail.

The glass dish isn't quite what I want to hold the mailbox key but it works for now.

It turned out great! I love how each piece has special meaning for our family.

In other news, I held a "Painting In The Vineyard" class at the vineyard close to our farm this weekend. Simon and Christine are such gracious hosts of Sabor a Pasion Estate and Vineyard and it's a beautiful setting. We had fun!
All set up and ready to go!
Good job, ladies!
Everyone with their beautiful paintings
I'll be teaching another class there soon - we'll be deciding on the date later this week so be sure to check their Facebook page and on my blog. We'd love to have you!

Creative Friday #3: Bee Stencil On Canvas

Welcome to the third Creative Friday!

We're starting a bee hive this Spring at the farm. Bruce has been reading up on the subject, watching YouTube videos, and talking to friends who own some. We got the hive last year (too late to start a colony) and have the bees on order for April. Yay! I can't wait to harvest our first bit of honey!

In keeping with making our gallery wall, I decided to take a small canvas and make an easy piece of art for it.

I started off with a 5x5" canvas.

Next, I painted it a dark charcoal grey (a great way to use up those sample jars of paint!).

Then cut a stencil using my new Christmas toy (thanks Bruce!)

After the paint dried, I stenciled the design onto the canvas with white paint. Easy-peasy! I like the white pounced over the grey. (Oh if you've never stenciled before, Donna over at Funky Junk Interiors has a great tutorial here).

I'm pretty excited about my little bee art. It was easy and fast and ties in nicely with the farm. Plus, it is my first project using my new Silhouette machine. I think I'm going to really have fun with this thing.

In other news, I've opened a new shop with Society6. This is a site artists can use to upload artwork to sell. Not only as prints and on canvas but also on a variety of products from phone cases, pillows, rugs, mugs, travel cups and more. I have 6 different pieces of art ready to go. I'd love for you to go check it out at https://society6.com/tinroofstudio.

What I Love About My Bedroom

I'm in love with my bedroom at the farm. I wanted a peaceful, relaxing room to sleep in, with of course, some farmhouse whimsy thrown in. I think I achieved that!  Every time I walk in, I heave a deep sigh of happiness. Just what I was after!

So what's my favorite part? That's a hard one - there are several things I love in this room.

I love the color of my walls. I was a bit worried when I first started painting them that it was going to be too dark. It's not. Instead, the color adds a richness and cocooning feel that was lacking with the plain white walls.

The curtains and furniture are neutral in color too. That way there isn't a lot of visual noise and I can control the amount of bright color by using accessories; in this case a few pops of color from my artwork and red accents, like the quilt Bruce's grandmother made us.

Also, I really love my new rug - I bought an indoor/outdoor one - it's soft underfoot but has a great textural look. Perfect!

My old door turned headboard with its metal accent piece is another thing I love. I actually found some tin ceiling tiles I think will work in the panels, so I will be replacing the metal piece with the tin eventually. It's such a great farmhouse look!

And of course, I adore my sliding barn door. I wasn't too sure about my paint treatment but after living with it a couple of weeks, I really like it. Plus, we don't have a door that eats up floor space. :o)

I love all the things that say "this is us". Like the bench with its stenciled saying,

the artwork that reflects country living,

Currier and Ives Four Seasons Prints

farm stitchery - a thrift store find

the pet portraits of my boys I painted in a colorful, whimsical style,

Herbie and Buddy - these make me smile every time!

and then small touches like my posh rabbit, old toy truck (mine), tractor (Bruce's), wood crate, fox, and rooster lamp.

Last and probably most important, I love our bed and soft sheets. They are essential for a good night's sleep!

We splurged and bought a really good mattress then I made sure we had soft and comfortable sheets to put on it. I have to admit I'm a sheet snob...I can't stand scratchy sheets. Parachute, a bedding company, offers luxurious bedding with attention to quality. I really want to buy a set and try them out. Their bedding sounds so sumptuous. Just what I like!

All these things add up to make this a room I truly love and enjoy. And very definitely us!

What's your favorite thing about your bedroom?

It might still be Spring, but here in Texas, things are starting to heat up and feel like Summer. I knew I needed to get the last of my Spri...
