From Gold to Espresso

I'm all pumped up after vacation to get some projects started and done! The city house has needed some freshening up - Y'all! we've been in this house 23 years as of the 23rd. Where has time gone? Anyway, the last major refresh was over ten years ago. We have lots to do. :-)

The hall bath was first on my list to tackle. Lots of golden oak cabinetry in this house but it's really good quality.
I shared my ideas for it in this post - I'm happy to report, I sanded and stained the cabinets this past week. It really wasn't too bad of a job. The old finish was pretty worn so most sanded off easily.

It looked much better after one coat. I couldn't wait to get the second coat on!

The second coat really darkened the color. I'm loving it! I used Minwax Polyshades in Espresso. I like having the poly with the stain! One less coat to put on.

So that's one major project done. Here's a side by side before and after picture:

Yay! No more scarred up golden oak. I love how it looks!

Repairing the shower grout is the next big project then it's all the fun stuff.

While I'm waiting for my grout samples to arrive, I've been working on some fun accessories. One is the light switch plate - I knew I needed to update the old one - (it's hard to find a four switch light plate). I had spray painted it silver with the last makeover but it was pretty yucky looking. I decided to give it a fun facelift inspired by our recent trip to the Northeast.
It was really fun to paint!

Be sure to come back next week for more projects - they involve seashells and sea horses and all things nautical.

  1. Your cabinets look wonderful with their new color. (I stained my oak bannister a darker color last year, too.) I thought your switch plate was decoupaged at first glance until I read you painted it. You are so talented! What a pretty scene!

  5. Wow! what a difference!
I like the darker stain. My hubby isn't a fan.
If we ever get new kitchen cabinets I certainly wouldn't mind the dark wood. Can't wait to see the finished room!

    1. Thanks! I guess everyone has their preference on wood color. :-) I was tired of the golden oak and wanted to go darker. It was between the Esspresso and a slightly lighter color but the Esspresso won. Glad you stopped by.

  7. A wonderful new color, dark stain is a favorite here. 23 years wow - This fall it will be 7 years at our existing place -our record. I get antsy around five so you can imagine I'm super antsy now. Great job and that light switch is great.

    1. :o) A huge difference. I wish I would have done that in my kitchen when we stripped all the cabinets and redid them. But alas, they are still golden oak. :p At least they look good with my counters. Guess that's why I painted the ones at the farm - because I could! Thank you for your kind comments. Happy day to you too, KariAnne!

  11. You did a beautiful job on your cabinets. They look gorgeous. My cabinets in the Master Bathroom have been looking very worn. I may have to try this. You are also very talented. That is amazing what you did with the light switch plate. I hope that you have a wonderful day!!!

  15. Love it!! Your cabinet looks amazing! It's incredible what a little redesign can do. I just finished my son's guest room vanity going from stained wood to dark espresso. I've also completed my whole house of cabinets. What a savings from tearing them out.
    Your vanity is gorgeous. xo
