I had initially thought I could just get by with cleaning it, getting rid of the furniture left behind, adding curtains, and furnishing it.
I had to convince Mr. B the desk had to go...too big and didn't go with my vision for a guest room:
The night stand/end table thingy is one ugly, heavy piece of furniture:
It got pressed into service as a stand for the tiny refrigerator we initially used. Now it's sitting out in the garage until I decide what it's good for...
The paint looked like a nice golden apricot until I put my curtains up. yikes! That made it turn very peachy and not the pretty golden color I wanted:
I decided then and there I was going to have to paint it. Although I thought about getting a rich golden color, I had 2 gals. of paint leftover from my master bedroom here in the city. It is a custom color similar to Behr's Creamy Mushroom only lighter. Neutral is good, plus it goes better with the tile. :o) I also gave all the trim a fresh new coat of white.
My twin sister gave me my mom's bedroom furniture to use as she was no longer using it. I had to reglue the joints, sand the old finish off, and then refinish it. Since my mom's favorite color was blue, I decided to use a blue stain. I think it turned out beautifully. What do you think?
The picture over the bed is from the thrift store - I paid $20 for it. I figured the frame was worth that much (it's a good size) but then discovered the picture went perfectly with the colors in the room.
My sweet Mother-in-law gave me the bedding. Although it's hard to tell from the pictures, it has a blue motif on a white background. Thanks, Bonnie!

The curtains are actually 60x84" tablecloths that I just added clips to and hung from the rod. I bought a couple of extra ones to use to cover the stool and to make a small quilt and pillow. I am still working on those.
On the dresser, I placed my mom's milk glass lamp along with a quilted heart and decorative bowl:
The room gets wonderful light during the day so that it feels warm and cozy. I am working on the last finishing touches - a decorative pillow with a stenciled saying and a raggie quilt to drape on the foot of the bed plus I'm looking for a few more pictures and accessories. I will show those when done.
I love how the room turned out. I hope my guests find it a comfortable place to rest and relax when they come visit.

I'm so glad I came by Cecilia - what a beautiful guest room - I LOVE those windows and the curtains are such a brilliant idea!
ReplyDeleteYou did a beautiful job on your Mom's bedroom set too - love that you chose her favorite color!
Now about that table you hate ( the one you kept a mini fridge on )
WHITE WHITE - WHITE - heavily distressed! Maybe some gray dry brushed over all those details! That particular style is so pretty painted.
There, that was a mouthful, right? lol
Have a great rest of the weekend, I'm taking a 10 minute painting break
Hugs
Suzan
( think I used it all up with this comment LOL )
Good idea Suzan -Want to come down and help me? :D
DeleteI was thinking of adding legs to it also....maybe it would make a nice kitchen island cart thingy.
Can't wait to see what you're painting - post it, ok?
Hugs back,
Cee
You did a wonderful job Cecilia! I absolutely love the blue that you used on your mother's bedroom set. Just gorgeous!! The curtains add some whimsy with that wonderful pattern. Anyone would be very happy to stay in such a warm and welcoming guest room! I'm just starting a guest room makeover myself, I just posted the before pics this past week. I can only hope mine turns out half as nice as yours. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteTuula :)
Thank you, Tuula. I loved the design on the tablecloth-turned-curtains as soon as I saw them. I can't wait to see your guest room all done! I bet it will be gorgeous. :o)

Hi Cecilia, All the blues go so well together. Isn't wonderful when you discover an item you have all of a sudden goes so well with other things you have.
ReplyDeleteLynnie
Yes, indeed Lynnie!
DeleteYour room turned out great, Cecilia. Great idea with the tablecloths turned curtains. You have pulled everything together beautifully- xo Diana
ReplyDeletethank you Diana! I always look in the clearance items to see what's on sale...when I was looking for the living room, I found the exact same pattern on the tablecloth as the curtains I liked and it was way cheaper than the curtain panels!
DeleteLovely bedroom and how neat to include your mom's favorite color with the bedroom set. Love the tablecloth curtains too, I keep forgetting about doing that!
ReplyDeletethank you!! I'd like to think she would love it.
DeleteYour guest room looks so cozy and inviting - such a wonderful job you did! I love the blue vanity and dresser. I'd really like to try this on some old furniture I have - I just never seem to get around to it. I know what you mean about it getting harder and harder leaving the peace and quiet to go back home. I really need to figure out how to just stay there - someday. For now, we're both really fortunate to have our own little slices of Heaven.
ReplyDeleteYes we are, aren't we? I am so grateful for that slice of Heaven! And someday soon, living at the farm will be a reality! Thanks, Karen.
DeleteWhat a lovely room! So cozy and welcoming. I am a new follower from "Make It Pretty"
ReplyDeleteThat big bulky end table would look wonderful painted.
